How to Take Care of Your Triathlon Wet Suit

Getting a triathlon wet suit is not like getting a cheap shirt which can be discarded after a few uses. It is, therefore, important to take care of it. Below are some things that you can do to make your wet suit usable for a long time:

  • Wash your suit with freshwater after every wear. If you use it a lot, rinse it with diluted wetsuit shampoo once in a while.
  • Hang it to dry on its hanger or one with foam, away from heat and sunlight. Do not tumble dry.
  • Store the suit on its hanger or by laying it flat. Make sure there are no creases.
  • And, put your suit on properly.

Yes, putting on a suit can be difficult, but do take great care in doing so nonetheless. Too much stretching or pulling with your fingernails can cause holes and tears. So trim those nails before putting on a suit. If that is not possible, put gloves on first. Use your fingers and fingertips to hold the suit.

6 Steps To Wear Your Triathlon Wet Suit Properly:

  • Put the suit on feet first, section by section, all the way to the hips.
  • Adjust the fabric. Start with the legs and pull the fabric up little by little until it is stretched. Make sure that you adjust not just the front part but also the back part of the suit.
  • Put one hand in one sleeve. Pull the sleeve up little by little until the fabric can be bunched up on your shoulder. Do the same to your other arm.
  • Check that the internal flap is flat on your back, then, close the collar. Pull the zipper up with your shoulders pulled back. Then, make sure that collar flap is flat and that the Velcro tab does not rub against your neck.
  • Adjust the fabric on the body by pulling it up little by little starting from the top of the legs up to the stomach and then the chest.
  • Adjust the sleeves the way you adjusted the fabric on the legs. Make sure that the fabric is stretched enough for you to comfortably swing your arms in a wide circular motion. The fabric should fit relatively loose on your shoulders.

So go ahead and enjoy the competition. Your triathlon wet suit will take care of you if you do the same.
